The latest from author and forager, Max Gordon, 01/09/2023

Here is your weekly dose of Foraging Friday, a list of what I’m pondering and exploring. I hope you’re having a great holiday season! Thank you for supporting my work. Please consider checking out these seasonal products for you are your family:

1
Homebiotic: household products that protect your home
2) Wildingshoes: minimal shoes that naturally strengthen feet

On January 7th, and on January 14th, i’ll be hosting free survival skills seminars in Jupiter and Boca Raton, Florida.

What i’m researching

The following is an excerpt from a paper by Lee A. Newsom and C. Margaret Scarry called “Homegardens and Mangrove Swamps: Pineland Archaeobotanical Research”

“Spanish accounts of Calusa Indians along the southwest Florida coast depict large human populations reliant on extensive maritime resources and a variety of wild plant foods and materials. Agriculture did not appear to be part of Calusa adaptations to the rich coastal environment…

The enigma to which Marquardt alludes is that while almost all the known people who achieve such complexity are agriculturists—dependent for subsistence on one or more staple crops and generally able to produce and distribute a surplus—the Calusa instead are described as a complex, tributary, fisher-gatherer-hunter society (Marquardt 1987, 1988, 1992d).

By the time of Spanish contact, the Calusa exerted influence over most of southern Florida, yet based on historical and archaeological data it appears the Calusa and other south Florida groups raised no crops”

Quote i’m pondering
